I
am an acting and public speaking coach, writer and director. I originally
trained as a scientist at Oxford and have had a career encompassing
theatre, films, television, books, business and sport. I am able
to bring this unusual breadth of experience to my work and my aim
in my teaching is to demystify matters, make them accessible and
release people’s talents.
I was for many years co-director of London’s Anna Scher Theatre
and have written and directed numerous stage plays and a musical:
most recently The
Moment That Lasts For Ever which ran at the Union Theatre, London
in 2001.
For television I co-wrote and directed the musical Ain’t
Many Angels and have contributed devised material and sketches
to many comedy shows. I also wrote the lyrics for the TV theme We
Are What’s in Our Dreams and, in 1998, appeared as an actor
in the BBC comedy series Operation
Good Guys. In 2005 I was dialogue coach and appeared as an actor
in the feature film Halal
Harry.
As an author I have written best-selling drama textbooks, most
notably the classic 100+ Ideas for Drama, which has sold in excess
of 100,000 copies worldwide. I have developed the use of improvisation
in the teaching of acting and had a pivotal role in the development
of many actors, writers, directors and singers.
In recent years I have also had a successful business career and
have been a successful master athlete, competing at world championship
level and winning British Veterans’ Athletics championships
national titles. I was until recently chairman of
London Heathside AC.
